The Lincoln Municipal Band, Nebraska's only professional wind ensemble, is dedicated to presenting the great tradition of American band concerts to the citizens of Lincoln and Nebraska.

The Lincoln Municipal Band is Nebraska's only professional wind ensemble. The organization was formed in 1907, making it Nebraskas oldest professional music organization.

Since 1911, the Lincoln Municipal Band has presented an annual series of free Sunday evening concerts during July and August in Antelope Park. These free concerts boast regular crowds of over 1,500 citizens from Lincoln and its surrounding communities. The typical audience includes couples, families, and senior citizens from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Lincoln Municipal Band presents concerts in a traditional turn of the 20th Century concert format that includes overtures, marches, pops music, instrumental soloists, and guest vocalists. Thematic titles and corresponding music create variety throughout the summer and include themes such as tributes to veterans, law enforcement, and teachers, as well as collaborative efforts with local organizations such as car clubs and military organizations.

John Shildneck, a former conductor of the band, began a tradition of inviting younger musicians to solo with the band. To continue providing this opportunity for solo performances with professional musicians, one talented young musician is chosen by audition each year to perform as the instrumental soloist. The winner of the annual John Shildneck Young Artist Competition is featured on the first summer concert.

The band also presents educational outreach in Lincoln area schools. Musicians from major sections of the band visit middle schools each year to conduct workshops with students and join their bands to rehearse with them.

The Lincoln Municipal Band has traditionally performed new band music in addition to standards of the repertoire. Over the past decade, the band has premiered new compositions and arrangements from Nebraska composers Randall Snyder, Boyd Bacon, and Jay Pralle, and has recorded a new work by nationally renowned composer Robert Jager. The Lincoln Municipal Band has performed for a number of popular events in Lincoln, including the Cornhusker State Games, the Fourth of July Celebration at Holmes Lake, and the Nebraska Bandmasters Convention. In 1994, the band toured central Japan and represented the City of Lincoln at the World Festival Exposition in Mie, Japan.

In 1992, the City of Lincoln named the band shell in Antelope Park after the late John Shildneck, in honor of over 50 years of service as conductor of the ensemble. The Lincoln Municipal Band hosted a variety of guest conductors following John Shildnecks tenure until the appointment of Dr. Herbert Dregalla, who was Music Director for nearly a decade. In 2000, the Lincoln Municipal Band was pleased to appoint highly noted Nebraska music educator Bob Krueger as Music Director and longtime Lincoln Public Schools instrumental music director Terry Rush as Assistant Director. The band received a Mayors Arts Award in 2006 and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007.
